ALS signed “Bill Fields,” one page, 8.5 x 10.75, personal letterhead, June 29, 1937. A letter to his physician, Dr. Stephen Smith at the Encinas Sanitarium. In part: “Dr. Thompson said he thought you might like 4 tickets to the Broadcast. If you can’t use them you might return them and I will get others for a later date. I have never felt better in my life. I even feel as though I had good sense. I am writing a book…with your permission, will dedicate the thing to yourself. Telling of your great kindness, even tenderness and care.” He adds the postscript: “If you decide to come get in about 3:30.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Fields’ hand. In fine condition, with mild edge toning. Fields entered the Encinas Sanitarium on at least four occasions to “dry out.” On Christmas day of 1946, he was again admitted to the Los Encinas Sanitarium where he died from cirrhosis of the liver.
