American composer who melded the jazz idiom with classical music forms in a number of timeless orchestral and stage works, including Rhapsody in Blue and Porgy and Bess. Striking vintage 7.75 x 10 portrait, signed and inscribed in the lower border, “For Marian—Wishing her everything nice, With admiration, George Gershwin, Nov. 25, 1931.” At lower left Gershwin also pens the famous theme from Rhapsody in Blue. The consignor, a relative of the original recipient, notes that “Marian” was Marion Bardell (born Fern Maxine Salyer, aka Billie Salyer), an entertainer who dated Gershwin in the early 1930s. Bardell appeared on Broadway and in a handful of films, including the 1933 Laurel and Hardy short “Me & My Pal.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 13.5 x 15.7. In fine condition, with three tiny spots of skinning near neck (which could be professionally retouched), mild corner creases, and two small areas of discoloration in the lower border, not affecting the signature or quotation.
