Description

Field makes hay while the creative sun shines: “The muse is a fickle mistress; she makes a practice of abandoning me for months at a time”

Writer best known for his poems of childhood, including “Wynken, Blynken, and Nod” and “Little Boy Blue.” ALS, one page on a lightly lined 5.5 x 8.25 sheet, April 22, 1890. The author submits a manuscript for publication. In full: “I send herewith some verses which seem to me to be adapted to the uses of the Youth’s Companion. Pray do not fear that I am going to deluge you with copy. This is the fifth contribution I have sent within nine weeks, but I am likely to suspend operations at any time. The muse is, as you may be aware, a fickle mistress; she makes a practice of abandoning me for months at a time. So I like to improve the opportunity while the spell is on.” In fine condition, with toning, mailing folds (one with advanced separation, well away from any writing), and some marginal chips and tears (away from writing). R&R COA.
