Description

Just two years before Peanuts debuts, art instructor Charles Schulz offers criticism to a budding cartoonist and shares his insights into the medium: “People rarely examine a cartoon, so strive to put over one idea only, and put it down in as simple a manner as possible“

TLS, three pages, 8.5 x 11, Art Instruction Inc. letterhead, July 27, 1948. In his capacity as a correspondence-school instructor in Minneapolis, Schulz offers detailed comments on a student’s work. In part: “You have handled the washes very successfully in this division, and with some addition practice in blending tones you should be able to turn out a very high quality wash drawing. . . . Congratulations on the excellent tone drawing made from Stoops model. . . . Although your tone cartoon has been drawn and rendered very well, a lot of the punch has been lost due to the confusion of elements. Do not try to put so much into one picture. There is no reasonable excuse for having an exploding lamp post in such a cartoon no matter how funny it may be . . . Strive to express essentials simply and directly.” In very good condition, with usual mailing folds (away from signature), mild even toning, and tears and losses to top edges which can be matted out. R&R COA.
