Description

Heads up! Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI documents, Louis’ signed less than six months before his date with the guillotine

The luckless queen of Louis XVI of France. Youthful extravagances made her many enemies, as did an unwitting involvement with a trick perpetrated on the Cardinal of Rohan. At the onset of the French Revolution, she attempted escape but was captured, imprisoned, and guillotined in October 1793. Louis was the third son of Dauphin Louis, husband of Marie Antoinette, deposed in September of 1792, tried for treason December 1792, found guilty, condemned to death and guillotined. Lot of two documents. DS, in French, one page, 9.5 x 13.5, July 1786. Document signed by Antoinette appears to be the settling of some accounts. Second is a one page DS, in French, signed “Louis, 9.5 x 13, dated August 5, 1792. Document reads, in part, “The Commissioners of the National Treasury will pay the sum of six million four hundred twenty two thousand nine hundred and fifty nine livres…in cash made by the Treasurer of the National Treasury during the month of July 1792. Both are housed in their own presentation folders. In very good condition, with bisecting horizontal fold, scattered light toning and creasing, slight paper loss to top left corner (all to Marie’s document), with Louis’ rating about fine, both with bold signatures. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
