Description

Howard champions the cause of Black refugees as he marches as part of Sherman’s Army: “In passing along the streets I notice quite a number of refugee Negroes who have followed the army since we left Fayettville, and who are necessarily subsisting upon what they obtain from the Army”

One-armed Union general who participated at Gettysburg and commanded the Army of Tennessee during Sherman’s March to the Sea. War-dated LS, one lightly lined page, 5.5 x 8, Headquarters Department of the Army of the Tennessee letterhead, March 26, 1865. As Howard’s forces march as part of Sherman’s Army en route from Savannah to Virginia to join Grant’s Army at Petersburg, he shows concern for the welfare of the Negro refugees he encounters along the way. In full, “In passing along the streets I notice quite a number of refugee Negroes who have followed the army since we left Fayettville, and who are necessarily subsisting upon what they obtain from the Army. Would it not we [sic] well to send them to Everettsville or Faisoni depot and have them forwarded there to Wilmington.” Scattered light toning and soiling, a couple small pencil notations and a few creases and wrinkles, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
