The hero of the Civil Rights movement writes of her own inspirational heroes: “My first hero was my maternal grandfather, Sylvester Edwards, who waited many nights with his old shot gun to protect us from the Ku Klux Klan if they should invade our home.”

A central figure in the US civil rights movement, she instigated the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott of 1955–56 by refusing to give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger as required by city law. Printed biographical sketch of Rosa Parks on an off-white 8.5 x 11 sheet, with Parks writing on the reverse, “My first hero was my maternal grandfather, Sylvester Edwards, who waited many nights with his old shot gun to protect us from the Ku Klux Klan if they should invade our home. I was six years old and stayed up with him. My mother was courageous and believed we should all be free people.” Parks signs at the conclusion, R. P.,” and also signs the front, “Rosa L. Parks.” Accompanied by a glossy 10 x 8 photo of Parks being fingerprinted by the police after her historic arrest, signed in black felt tip by Parks, and the original mailing envelope of the sketch, addressed in Parks’ hand. In fine condition, with light mailing folds. R&R COA.
