Description

Coltrane goes “Spasmodical”: Music manuscript in the hand of the jazz legend

Saxophonist, bandleader, and composer whose brilliant improvisatory skills and experimental spirit made him one of the most influential and highly regarded musicians in the history of jazz. After playing tenor and soprano sax with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, he led his own groups and made such classic recordings as Giant Steps, My Favorite Things, and A Love Supreme. He died of liver cancer in 1967 at the age of forty-one. Unsigned music manuscript in pencil on a preprinted sheet of staff paper, one page, 9.5 x 12, apparently a single instrumental part (quite possibly for saxophone) for a piece titled “Spasmodica.” The manuscript consists of approximately twenty-eight measures in cut time, further bearing the notations “Intro” at the top and “Repeat 1st 8 Bars” and “Ending” near the bottom. The verso bears a pencil notation in another hand and the Coltrane estate’s “2005 Jowcol Music” copyright ink stamp. In good condition, with toning, soiling, staining, creases, and a few edge tears. COA Roger Epperson/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
