Feisty Truman letter, “between you and me and the gatepost I don’t think there will be any fine appointments under that Science Foundation bill because, in my opinion, it’s no good,” as well as mentioning Harry Vaughan, who resigned under the cloud of an infuluence-peddling scandal

TLS as president signed “Harry,” one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, July 24, 1947. Feisty letter to his friend Edward McKim. McKim was a World War I, Battery D friend of Truman’s. In part, “I am happy to know of your interest in Gustafson. I offered him a position on the Atomic Energy Commission which he refused to take because of his commitments to the University of Nebraska. Just between you and me and the gatepost I don’t think there will be any fine appointments under that Science Foundation bill because, in my opinion, it’s no good. I really think you ought to get out that booklet you contemplate. It certainly would make Mr. Allen and Mr. Farley more ridiculous than they are. I talked to Harry Vaughan about that Notre Dame game and I am sure he can nail the tickets for you.” At the bottom, Truman adds in his own hand, “My best to Mary & the kids. Sure glad Larry’s operation is a success.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition, with a bisecting horizontal mailing fold. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
