Description

Princeton president Wilson is against contests away from college: “...Proposal does not recommend itself to my judgment at all. It seems to me a mistake to allow any crew to go away from Princeton...”

TLS, two pages, 6 x 8, Princeton University, President’s Room letterhead, March 29, 1910. A letter to a colleague at Princeton. In part: “I have been thinking over the matters you mention on behalf of the Committee on Outdoor Sports. I can see no objection…The other proposal does not recommend itself to my judgment at all. It seems to me a mistake to allow any crew to go away from Princeton. I have always thought it a mistake to allow bodies of men going away as individuals and not as responsible representatives of the university, to undertake contests of any kind away from college.” In fine condition, with scattered creasing, an even block of toning to the second page. In 1902, Wilson become president of Princeton University; as president of the university, Wilson proposes “quad” reform, which would eliminate undergraduates’ elite social clubs. R&R COA.
