Description

Friends in high places, Twain endorses a German Prince to his friends, “He is a fine man, widely cultivated, very rich, is First Secretary to the German Embassy here & consequently in the line of diplomatic promotion.”

ALS signed “S. L. Clemens,” one lightly lined page both sides, 5.75 x 9, Hotel Krantz letterhead, February 2, 1899. Letter of introduction written on behalf of Prince Lichnowsky. In full, “Prince Lichnowsky is leaving for a health & vacation trip around the world & will reach New York by way of San Francisco some time next spring & I wish to commend him to you & through you to your friends, if I may. He is a fine man, widely cultivated, very rich, is First Secretary to the German Embassy here & consequently in the line of diplomatic promotion, & has other good qualities, among them a competent knowledge of our language & literature. The family is Austrian & German, & is of high political & social distinction in both countries. What I am saying of his character & standing is from personal knowledge, not hearsay, & Mrs. Clemens adds her endorsement & that is sufficient. We & our girls send homage & warm greetings to you.” In very good condition, with bisecting vertical mailing fold, light toning and creasing and a few wrinkles. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
