Description

Signed with a smile: Sheet music signed with a sketch by Paul McCartney

Nifty off-white 8 x 10 sheet of music manuscript paper with handwritten music notations (not by McCartney) on both sides, signed in black ballpoint, “To Brenda, with love from hubbies mate! Paul McCartney,” the singer whimsically extending the “y” of his name into a cartoony sketch of a smiling man with a small tuft of hair and a bowtie. Beneath the bars of music, McCartney additionally wrote, “What’s all this then?”—apparently a self-deprecating joke related to his well-known inability to read or write music notation. The consignor notes that “Brenda” was the wife of saxophonist John Casey, who played with McCartney in the 1970s. The hasty, sketchy appearance of the musical notations suggests that they were made in an on-the-spot situation, perhaps as notes for an improvisation during a recording session or concert. In fine condition, with folds touching signature, some light scattered staining, and light edge wear with punch holes at left margin. COA Roger Epperson/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
