Letter of recommendation for John Lee, written to Secretary of the Treasury Oliver Wolcott. In part, “Lee is an Englishman, has been in the U. States since some time in 1778 and in that year took the oath of allegiance. He was last year introduced to me by Mr. Boudinot…[and] has several times expressed to me his wishes that Mr. Lee might be appointed to some small office. Lee now informs me that there are vacancies in the office of inspectors of the customs, and requests this time to make him known to you.” Even overall toning, mounting strip along left edge on reverse with some light show through of adhesive and a couple small pencil notations, otherwise fine condition.
