Description

One of the greatest medical minds of the 19th century is overwhelmed by the publication of a journal: “...Manuscript has exceeded my estimate so much that I was already obliged to send a number of apologetic notes...”

His many discoveries include cells in bone and connective tissue; substances, such as myelin; and pathologies, such as embolism and leukemia. In 1855 he published his now-famous aphorism omnis cellula e cellula ("every cell stems from another cell"). ALS in German, signed “R. Virchow,” three pages on two adjoining 4.25 x 5.5 sheets, Berlin, February 3, 1890. A letter to a colleague regarding papers for inclusion in a journal. In part: “Highly esteemed doctor, I recognize the validity of your question…I can only help you next week. The size of the elder manuscript has exceeded my estimate so much that I was already obliged to send a number of apologetic notes during the last few days. Unfortunately, I don’t even have the opportunity to insert your paper in the third issue, which is being printed. There are so many already completed, that there is almost not room…I can’t make room for you until the August issue. Should this forced situation agree with you, I may ask that you let me know which corrections you could do in the current month, or provide someone who can do the corrections in your place.” In very good condition, with a couple of small separations along the horizontal fold, tiny bit of paper loss at fold intersection, and light overall soiling. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
