One of the 20th century's most famous American writers. From his experience in the Spanish Civil War came his great novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954 and guaranteed his renown by committing suicide in 1961. Remarkable and literarily significant lot of two items. The first is Hemingway’s signature and inscription on a white, 5 x 3 page which reads, “To Arthur Howard, with best regards, Ernest Hemingway, Salt Lake City, November 14, 1946.” The second item is written entirely in Hemingway’s hand and is from the fly leaf of his book, For Whom The Bell Tolls. It, too, is on a 5 x 3 white page and reads, in full: “Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
