Union general. Staying with the Union, he led the Army of the Mississippi in a campaign that opened the great river nearly to Memphis. His failures after the peninsular campaign and at Second Bull Run (August 1862), precipitated his replacement by Gen. George McClellan. In part, “Please make for me & send at your very earliest convenience by Express an overcoat to be made as follows - Of Beaver cloth…& light material, that is not heavy…I don’t wish the overcoat to be heavy & no padding…to be used. I need the overcoat very much & hope you will make & send it without delay.” In very good condition, with moderate mailing folds, vertical office notation to body text, some scattered light soiling and foxing and a clean signature.
