Description

A week after Armistice Day, Taft writes Indiana governor Hanly regarding letters of introduction for Lloyd-George and Clemenceau

27th President of the United States (1909–1913), whose term was marked by antitrust activity and passage of the Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act (1909). He later served as the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1921–1930). TLS, November 21, 1918. A letter to Indiana governor J. Frank Hanly regarding letters of introduction for Lloyd-George and M. Clemenceau. Accompanied by an unsigned copy of Hanly’s response to Taft. Taft has added “With best wishes” in his own hand. Accompanied by a small photo of Taft. In fine condition, with mild toning and trivial soling to left edge, letters attached at upper left. Lloyd-George was the British Prime Minister who had been declared “The Man Who Won The War,” and M. Clemenceau (perhaps a relative of Georges Clemenceau, Prime Minister of France). R&R COA.
