TLS in German, signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Nassau Point, Peconic, Long Island, June 23, 1938. A letter to Max Ludwig Berges in Manila, which likely is about Einstein assisting Berges in getting permission to immigrate to the U.S. On August 9, 1938, Einstein wrote to the American Consul in Manila, recommending that permission be granted to Berges to immigrate. In full: “Dear Mr. Berges: In the meantime, I have sent warm and encouraging letters to Mr. Brager and Mrs. Zeckendorf. Bucky’s are close friends of mind. As they already are engaged to the limit with such requests, I shall consult with them in case the others should decline. As soon as I have learned anything worthwhile, I will be writing to you again, Friendly greetings.” In very good condition, with several folds, scattered creasing, horizontal fold directly beneath the signature and a vertical fold through the end of the signature, edge toning, bit a paper loss in left margin. The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society was founded by Einstein to help refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
