Lawman best remembered as the killer of notorious gunfighter Billy the Kid on July 14, 1881. Ironically, Garrett and Bonney had once been friends before they ended up on opposite sides of the law. In part, “I sent you today…a lot of papers that will furnish your reading for several days…A new house is being built north of our house, six rooms. Annie left Monday night - don’t know how long she will be gone. You may look for me on the day I said I would be there. Kiss our babies for me.” The pencil Garrett used was not sharp, but the content is still legible.
