Lot #165
John Tyler

Tyler comments on his daughter–in–law’s political mind, as she states “Altogether I felt too vexed and panic at the absolute injustice done to father, that it has made me really sick & miserable of course the Polkites want a serious ticket – they seem not to succeed without father’s assistance.”

Description

Tyler comments on his daughter–in–law’s political mind, as she states “Altogether I felt too vexed and panic at the absolute injustice done to father, that it has made me really sick & miserable of course the Polkites want a serious ticket – they seem not to succeed without father’s assistance.”

ANS signed “J. T.,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10, June 4. ANS written by John Tyler on the reverse of the second page of an ALS written by Mrs. Robert Tyler, to her husband, who is John Tyler’s son. Mrs. Tyler’s letter reads in part, “They say the selection of Potts & Dallas was intended to work against father as much as anyone else. Potts they thought the only man who General Jackson would prefer to the president and Dallas they chose to withdraw the support of Wilkins…Is not Jno. Calhoun acting strangely or rather his friend. They have pledged support of South Carolina for Polk and Cohen of Georgia (a Calhoun man) has promised Georgia. Altogether I felt too vexed and panic at the absolute injustice done to father, that it has made me really sick & miserable of course the Polkites want a serious ticket – they seem not to succeed without father’s assistance – with that I have no doubt the democratic party will be successful.” On the reverse of the second page, Tyler writes, “The advice you give Robert is excellent – do as you think best about coming here.” In very good condition, with professional repairs to fold separations, scattered light toning and soiling and a couple other tape repairs. R&R COA.
