Description

Three months before his death, Bishop William White, the architect of the Episcopal Church, writes of the fall of mystic Babylon, prophecy and the Book of Revelations

ALS signed “Wm. White,” one page, 8 x 10, April 20, 1836. Letter to Susan R. Echard. In part, “It was very agreeable to me to learn from your accompanying newspaper, that your son is employed in the blessed work of preaching the Gospel to the Heathen. It seems to me, that the present is the time especially pointed out for it, not only by Providence, but by Prophecy. I have been long dissatisfied with the interpretations usually given of Rev.14.6. They construe the Proclamation of the Angel, as significative of certain Testimonies to the Truths of the Gospel, which have been furnished during the whole of the reign of the Papacy. But when I carry on my attention to the 7th and 8th verses, I perceive it to be when there shall approximate the Fall of Mystic Babylon, of which there are considerable premonitory symptoms. Is it then impossible, that the many modern undertakings of a Missionary Description, and for the Distribution of the Bible in all the known languages of the World, are providential Preparations for the Appearance of the symbolic Angel, with the Gospel to be preached to ‘every Nation and Kindred and Tongue and People?’” A fine letter written just three months before Bishop White’s death at the age of eighty-eight by this architect of the Episcopal Church. In very good condition, with even overall toning, light soiling a few small spots of paper loss and letter affixed to a slightly larger board. R&R COA.
