Description

Brando gets involved in Polynesian politics: “The first meeting must be strictly private and only to include Gaston Flosse and myself”

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, April 5, 1993. An interesting letter to his lawyer regarding discussions with Gaston Flosse, President of the Governing Council of French Polynesia. In full: “I think it will be essential for you to attend a meeting to discuss the details and the legal implications of my discussions with Gaston Flosse, however, the first meeting must be strictly private and only to include Gaston Flosse and myself. Pending that discussion, I will decide whether or not it will be useful to further explore the plans that I will have presented. I will call you immediately after having the meeting with Gaston Flosse to discuss with you the details of that meeting. Please locate Monsieur Flosse and send me his telephone number where he can be reached. Please do this as soon as possible, Claude. Thank you.” In 1965, the reclusive Brando puchased an island in French Polynesia, the atoll Tetiaroa, near which he had filmed Mutiny on the Bounty a few years earlier. Long active in human rights and environmental politics, Brando’s interest in Flosse may well have been related to Flosse’s pro-French, pro-nuclear-testing position, which would have had a direct impact on Brando’s island paradise. In fine condition, with file holes and small loss in left margin and clerical ink stamp at upper right. COA PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
