Description

Hand-addressed envelope, incorporating her surname “Brönte,” with provenance from her widower

Author of Jane Eyre. Exceedingly rare hand-addressed mailing envelope, 4.5 x 2.5, addressed in Brönte’s hand to “Revd. P. Brönte, Haworth, Keighly, Yorkshire,” with a red one penny stamp affixed to top right corner. Envelope is accompanied by an ALS from Brönte’s widower, Arthur Bell Nichols, dated April 24, 1855, to a lady, “In compliance with your wish to posses a fragment of my poor wife’s handwriting.” Both are matted and framed to an overall size of 7.25 x 12.25. Description on reverse of frame indicates the envelope bears a postmark of June 7/8, 1851, on the reverse, however this cannot be verified. In fine condition, with some scattered light soiling and blue and brown ink spotting, affecting only a couple letters of address. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
