Novelist who based his stories on the adventures he encountered as a prospector, hobo, pirate, gentleman farmer, reformer, and war correspondent. A troubled, but gifted writer he was addicted to alcohol and drugs but, in his day, he was the highest-paid writer in America. ALS, one page, 5 x 8, Chicago & North-Western Railway letterhead, November 6, 1905. Short letter to a friend. In full, “Expect to be in New York first part of December.
