Department of Labor as a specialist in labor law, he was appointed Watergate Special Prosecutor, commissioned with investigating the Watergate scandal in 1973. When Cox insisted that the White House turn over secret tapes, President Nixon ordered him fired in what became known as the Saturday Night Massacre. I am not sufficiently familiar with the evidence developed after I was dismissed to give you a definite answer, but I believe that before Leon Jaworski was finished, the Watergate Special Prosecution force had strong reason to conclude that White House officials just below the President and possibly the President had known of the plan and made no objection…you ask whether I still believe that President Ford should not have pardoned Former President Nixon before Mr. Nixon was indicted and had a trial.
