A letter and signed portrait, from General Wainwright while in the hospital

Major general who defended Bataan and Corregidor and who survived a stint as a prisoner of war from 1942–45. Lot of two signed items includes: a handsome 8 x 10 portrait of Wainwright in uniform, signed and inscribed “To Mr. and Mr. R.D. Smith, Sincerely, J. M. Wainwright, General, U.S.A. (Retired); and a TLS, one page, on 8 x 10 Ashford General Hospital letterhead, dated October 14, 1945, which reads, in part: “It was good of you to think of me on the day that I landed at San Francisco after five years’ absence from the country. Adele and I remember our associations with you and Captain Prescott so pleasantly when we were both stationed at Fort Yellowstone.” In overall fine condition, with scattered faint ceasing and a small area of discoloration to the letter, a corner crease and light rippling to the lower border of the portrait.
