Historic photo of the signing of the Japanese surrender, inscribed by Nimitz to an admiral whose “contribution to the war effort in World War II which made possible the above scene”

Famous photo of the Japanese surrender aboard the U.S.S. Missouri on Tokyo Bay on Sept 2, 1945. Among those pictured are Vice Admiral John S. McCain (Senator John McÇain’s father) and Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, the polar explorer. Historic 13.5 x 9.75 photo, signed and inscribed in ink “To John W.W. Cumming, R.Adm., USN -Ret- with best wishes and great appreciation of your contribution to the war effort in World War II which made possible the above scene. C.W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral, USN.” The photo is matted and framed to an overall size of 14.5 x 11.5. Admiral Cumming wrote “A Tribute to Our Flag” on June 8, 1942 and donated it to the Library of Congress on November 10, 1942. A copy of Cumming’s “Tribute” accompanied the photo. In fine condition.
