Lot of three letters written by crewmen of the Constitution. One letter, dated June 15, 1837, three sides of two adjoined pages, is written to Commodore Elliot and signed by thirteen crew members. In the letter, they relate restrictions laid on them by Captain Boerum. In part, “We have been refused permission to go on shore, and deprived of perhaps our only opportunity of visiting scenes fraught with both interest and instruction to us - we are unaware of any serious offense either against the ship, or Navy…No Officer among us expects to escape or wishes to avoid the punishment.” Also included is a three page letter from W. Patterson Jones to his sister, dated June 7, 1845 and a short ALS from Charles Stewart dated March 25, 1846. In fine overall condition. R&R COA.
