Lincoln pardons a boy - perhaps the famed young man Lincoln saved from being shot for sleeping at his post.

War dated handwritten endorsement, signed “A. Lincoln” and dated March 9, 1864 on a 3.5 x 2.75 off-white slip. Lincoln writes, “Let this boy be discharged.” A story abut Lincoln entitled The Lad Needed His Sleep, stating that Lincoln “had just written a pardon for a young man who had been sentenced to be shot for sleeping at his post. He remarked as he read it to me: "'I could not think of going into eternity with the blood of the poor young man on my skirts.” Endorsement is affixed to an 8 x 10 sheet along with a printed copy of the tale, a postcard of Lincoln’s birthplace and a postcard portrait of a statue of Lincoln. In very good condition, with a couple light folds, overall soiling, some wrinkling, and a small stain to the “A.” COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
