Description

Scott apologizes for not being able to attend, “the rolling party which would have afforded me much entertainment”

Scottish novelist and poet, author of Ivanhoe. ALS, one page, 7.25 x 9, no date. Apologetic letter to a friend. In part, “It grieves me much to say that having been so long absent from town and my stay being so short I have got it indispensably filled with engagements which prevent my seeing the rolling party which would have afforded me much entertainment. I trust to have an opportunity to shake hands with you at Woolwich…I regret much to hear young Hector your nephew is returning to indifferent health.” Integral second page bears an address panel in Scott’s hand. In good condition, with tape reinforcements and repairs to all folds on reverse of both pages, scattered light toning and soiling, small label to lower left and pencil notation to top right. R&R COA.
