Description

John Hancock endorsement on Lord Colville’s receipt regarding Sir Jeffrey Amherst

Important handwritten endorsement, signed within the text, on the reverse of a document signed by Alexander Lord Colville, 6.25 x 3.75, dated April 6, 1762, pertaining to “pacquet from Sir Jeffrey Amherst, under Mr. [Thomas] Hancock’s cover,” signed at the conclusion “Colville.” On the reverse, Hancock writes, “Lord Colville’s Receipt for the Packett sent him by Mr. Hancock from General Amherst by the Express Vessell Capt. Howes.” Thomas Hancock, John’s uncle, made a fortune supplying British troops at Halifax during the Seven Years War. Thomas would make John a full partner, with John inheriting the whole business upon Thomas’ death in 1764. In fine condition, with a bisecting vertical fold, not affecting any text of endorsement, light toning, a bit heavier at edges and a bit of light edge wear. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
