Description

Marilyn Writes a Check to legendary acting instructor Michael Chekhov

Check, 8.25 x 3.5, completely filled out and signed by Monroe, payable to Mr. M[ichael] Chekhov for $30.00, July 14, 1954. In very good condition, with some prior water damage resulting in the “bleeding” appearance of several letters, three vertical folds, one through a letter of the signature, and the usual bank stamps appearing a bit blurry due to water damage. Michael Chekhov's unique contribution to acting has been one of the best kept secrets of the theatrical world. Born in 1891, Michael, nephew of Anton Chekhov, became one of Russia's Most Honored Actors. Constantine Stanislavski considered Misha his most brilliant pupil. He is often considered to be the finest actor Russia has ever produced. By 1928, as head of the Second Moscow Art Theater, Chekhov's innovative directing and teaching had provoked such severe criticism by the Communist government, he was forced to flee the country for safety. Besides Marilyn Monroe, his other students included Anthony Quinn, Jack Palance, Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal, Gregory Peck, Clint Eastwood, Beatrice Straight, Lloyd Bridges, Elia Kazan and Martin Ritt. Monroe even left a good deal of money to Chekhov’s widow in her will. R&R COA.
