Description

For eleven lines, Sturges admits inadequacy in writing French, then writes his message in two lines of English

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, April 8, 1949. A letter to the Director of the Consortium de Presse Cinematographique in Paris. In part: “Again my immediate impulse to write to you was put off by the fact that I am shy about my French…written that is…not spoken. I am so afraid always of an error in spelling or grammar, hardly permissible to an Ancien Lyceen de Janson de Sailly, that I invariably postpone my reply until the fortuitous visit of Florey or somebody to help me write it. Of course when they come I forget to ask them and then I am rude and late with my answer like now. Your warm, charming letter about The Miracle gave me great happiness.” (Probably a reference to The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek). In fine condition, with light vertical fold through a letter of the signature, a faint “received” stamp, light edge toning. R&R COA.
