Rare pair of war dated endorsements on a letter from 2nd Sergeant Andrew J. Hunter writing from the Headquarters of the 3rd Army Corps on November 12, 1864. Hunter writes to a Sergeant, in part, “I guess you have heard of the recent fight of the 27th last month at Burgess Mills in which Macrae’s Brigade was engaged and suffered severely in prisoners. And Gen’l A. is sorry to inform you that your whole staff was captured except Lieut. Bob Taylor. Maj. H. S. Taylor has gone North with your ‘Warbag.’...Poor Gus is in the ranks and I pity him.” When the letter is turned ninety degrees, Hill’s endorsement reads “Hd. Qrs. 3d Army Corps Respectfully Approved and forward by order of A. P. Hill, Lieut. Genl.” It appears the endorsement was written over by Hunter, when he wrote this letter. At the top left corner, unaffected by any text, Hill wrote “A. P. Hill Lieut. Gen.” All indications would seem that this was a piece of paper removed from a larger document by Hunter, which had been endorsed twice by Hill, and with paper being scarce in the Confederacy at this time, Hunter tore off the endorsed page for his letter. In very good condition, with even overall toning, some scattered light spotting and soiling and expected folds. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
