Thalberg was a legendary Hollywood production executive who took hold of Universal City at age 20, and supervised such films as Ben Hur and Mutiny on the Bounty. He died of pneumonia at age 37. An agreement hiring Totheroh “to write for us, a complete adaptation and dialogue for a motion picture photoplay to be based upon the story entitled ‘The Crisis.’ You agree to create and write said adaptation to finish the same and deliver a completed copy to us on or before August 1, 1930…We shall have the right to use your name in connection with any photoplay and in connection with any other works based in whole or in part upon said adaptation…the sum of $750.00 per week, to be due and payable on Saturday of each week…” Boldly signed in black ink by both at the bottom of page three.
