French statesman and officer who became an intimate associate of George Washington and advanced the American cause on both sides of the Atlantic. ALS in French, signed “Lafayette,” one page, 7.5 x 8.5, personal letterhead, Paris, April 29, 1834. The untranslated letter to a Mr. Arnault appears to be written three weeks before Lafayette’s death. The original mailing address and cancellation stamps appear to the reverse in a manner which could be folded and sealed for mailing. In very good condition, with scattered surface creasing, toning, and a vertical fold that affects two letters of the signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
