Author of The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table and the poems Old Ironsides and The Chambered Nautilus, among others. AQS on a 4.5 x 7 off-white sheet, dated 1889. The final stanza of his well-known poem The Chambered Nautilus, in full: 'Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul/ As the swift seasons roll!/ Leave thy low-vaulted past!/ Let each new temple, nobler than the last,/ Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast/ File then at length out free/Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea!' Signed at the conclusion 'Oliver Wendell Holmes.' In fine condition, with mounting remnant along left edge. RRAuction COA.
