Noted director. He perfected such cinematic devices as the flashback, the iris shot, the mask, and crosscutting. In 1920, he established United Artists with Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and William S. Hart. Original vintage signed ink and colored pencil portrait sketch of Griffith wearing an overcoat and hat on an off-white 9 x 12.25 card, signed 'Sincerely, D.W. Griffith' in ink beneath the image. The sketch is also signed by the artist, 'Griffith, 1918.' In fine condition, with a few scattered creases, one touching a letter of the signature, two corner chips which could easily be matted out, adhesive residue on the reverse from a previous mounting.
