Description

Oscar Wilde

Irish writer and leader of the Aesthetic Movement, author of The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Happy Prince, etc., whose career and health were shattered by his imprisonment on charges of sodomy. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.5, no date. Letter reads, in full, 'I write to you as our Chelsea member to ask you to help with your influence and recommendation my old friend Dr. Fisher of Oakley Street, who is applying for the post of Divisional Surgeon to the Police, vacant by poor Daniel's death. Dr. Fisher, like Dr. Daniel, was a pupil of my Father's and we have known him and respected him for many years - He is hard working, energetic, and full of sound sense - just the man for the post. Since my marriage he has been my family doctor, and though you converted him to Unionism at the last election, we have not changed him! So I am not keeping my party in this matter. Believe me to be Oscar Wilde." In fine condition. Original Sarony cabinet portrait included. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
