Russian dramatist and short story writer. He achieved great success with the revival by Stanislavsky of his play, The Seagull (1898). His masterpieces, Uncle Vanya (1901), The Three Sisters (1901) and The Cherry Orchard (1904) followed. ALS signed 'A. Chekhov,' one page, 4.25 x 6.5, November 28, 1888. Letter, in Cyrillic, to Ivan Maximovich, informing him that his new one-act play "The Proposal" has been passed by the censor. A comic farce which focuses not on the proposal, but on the impediments preventing it, this little play drew compliments from Tsar Alexander III.
