Description

?This is in reply to your recent communication in regard to the issuance of a special stamp in honor of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.?

TLS signed 'John Kennedy,' one page, 8 x 10.5, United States Senate, Washington, D.C. letterhead, April 9, 1954. Interesting and quite significant content as JFK became the first (and only, to date) Catholic president of the U.S. In part: 'This is in reply to your recent communication in regard to the issuance of a special stamp in honor of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. I want you to know that I have joined with Senator Humphrey and other Members of Congress in endorsing the issuance of this special stamp. However, I have just received a reply from the Postmaster General. I am sorry to report that no encouragement could be offered at this time as the the Postmaster General is considering a new series of regular stamps. If this materializes, the issuance of strictly commemorative stamps will of necessity have to be greatly reduced due to production limitations. While I regret that I cannot send a more hopeful report, I am sure you do realize that such matters as these are strictly within the purview of the Postmaster General.' In fine condition with a large, bold signature. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
