In part, 'I received your favor yesterday and am very much obliged to you for your action in the matter of the convention...I do not know whether I will get out to the convention or not; it looks very doubtful at this time.' At the Republican convention in June, McKinley received only two complimentary votes, and would not be until November of 1897 when he won the nomination and presidency.
