Description

?Doesn't it seem to you that the fact that I go to church ought to make a much stronger appeal than anything I could write about going to church??

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, July 15, 1908. Letter to Rev. H.A. Bridgman of the Pilgrim Press in Boston: 'I have your letter of the 14th instant. I am not planning any literary undertakings for next year, barring my African trip. Now, my dear sir, I would like to do anything you ask, but somehow I do not think I could write the kind of article you wish. Doesn't it seem to you that the fact that I go to church ought to make a much stronger appeal than anything I could write about going to church? I could not write any article at present anyhow, but somehow, I do not believe that if I had the time I could write the article you desire.' Interestingly, a favorite Bible passage of Roosevelt's, James 1:22, declares, 'Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.' In very good condition, with light overall toning, bisecting horizontal mailing fold and some light spotting, lightly affecting last name of the slightly-light signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
