Description

'Each soldier had one bottle and drank it to the Republic. I hope you approve of this distribution.'

French General, 1768-1800. A nobleman, Louis Desaix joined the Republican armies in 1791 and within three years was a general of division. He campaigned with Napoleon Bonaparte in North Italy and in 1798 joined the expedition to Egypt. He masterminded the capture of Malta and victory at Ramanieh and, when Bonaparte set out to conquer Syria, Desaix pacified Upper Egypt and chased an elusive Murad Bey. Returning to France he was captured by the British navy, but made it back to his homeland in time to save Bonaparte at Marengo. Very rare LS in French, signed 'Desaix,' one page both sides, 8 x 12.5, Armee Du Rhin, Republique Francaise letterhead, February 7. A letter to General Michaud, in command of the Army of the Rhine. Desaix describes the previous day's victories. In part: 'I am very sorry to see such cowardly enemies. For four days I have been attacking hem with detachments of little strength. I had taken seven casks of wine. I had them distributed at the cantonments at Schifferstatt. Each soldier had one bottle and drank it to the Republic. I hope you approve of this distribution.' Accompanied by a full English translation and French transcript. In fine condition, with small area of tape repair to separation at lower border, usual age wear. RRAuction COA.
