ALS, two pages both sides, 5 x 8, November 27, 1862. A soldier writes to his cousin. In part, 'We are about nine miles from fortress Monroe. The Monitor is here and a bout five others...There is about forty large ships of theirs so the rebels better keep back if they know when they are well off. I don't know as they are going to try to get this place back. I went out in the woods the other day and sar [sic] large holes in the ground whir [sic] the bombshells hit.'
