Writer. From the age of 29, paralysis of one side confined her to a wheelchair. Her work reflects the sadness of lonely people, and her first book, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, about a deaf mute, distinguished her immediately as a novelist of note. She wrote the best and the bulk of her work in a six-year burst through World War 2, including the novella The Ballad of the Sad Cafe, which was dramatized by Edward Albee. McCullers gives Doubleday and company permission to reprint her story entitled The Soujourner, which originally appeared in the May 1950 edition of Mademoiselle. The story will be reprinted in a volume entitled Prize Stories of 1951: The O. Henry Awards, Selected by Herschel Brickell. McCullers signs at the bottom of the letter of request, crossing out the 'Mr.,' and writing in 'Mrs.,' as well as the date.
