In 1775 he was elected to the Continental Congress, where he signed the Declaration of Independence. In 1778 he returned to South Carolina to serve as a Judge. He was taken prisoner by the British while in command of a Militia force during the siege of Charleston. DS, signed 'Th. Heyward,' one page, 13 x 8.5, August 14, 1787. Document signed as Governor of South Carolina, summoning the Sheriff to bring William Ballarmy and his wife Esther before the Justices to render payment of 468.4.8, signed in black ink on the left edge under the seal.
