Description

George Washington free frank addressed to Judge Advocate John Lawrence, who presided over the courts martial of Benedict Arnold and Major André

Free franked envelope panel, measuring 5.75 x 3 folded and opening to an overall size of 11.75 x 7.25. Addressed in another hand to 'John Lawrence Esqr., Judge Advocate,' and franked in the lower left corner 'Go. Washington.' Scattered light toning and soiling, small area of paper loss to far top edge, expected folds, seal remnants to bottom and a bold signature, otherwise fine condition. This is interesting because Lawrence presided over the courts martial of Benedict Arnold and successfully presented the case against Major Andre. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
