Description

Urgent war dated letter concerning “ a letter of the second instant from his Excellency, General Washington.”

A member of the Stamp Act Congress in 1765, a formative member of the Delaware Committee of Correspondence, a military leader in the colonial militia, and a delegate to the Continental Congress from formation until 1777. The following year he was elected President of the State of Delaware for a three year term, a duty that he assumed even as he served as Major-General of the Delaware Militia. ALS, one page, 8 x 9.5, June 14, 1780. War dated letter to the General Assembly. In full, 'I have just received a letter of the second instant from his Excellency, General Washington, and one other of the same date from the Committee of Co- operation. The important matters they contain make it necessary they should be laid before your Honors for consideration. I have therefore directed the Secretary to do it immediately.' Well done repairs to two total horizontal separations along folds, lightly affecting bottom of signature, repaired tear near bottom and scattered light toning, otherwise very good condition. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
