Description

Thornton authorizes the delivery of gunpowder

Thornton was selected as the first President of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, and as a justice to the Superior Court, under the new constitution. He was also sent to the Continental Congress-too late to participate in the debates over Independence, but just in time to sign the Declaration on behalf of New Hampshire. DS, signed 'Matthew Thornton, Chairman,' one page, 7 x 5.25, June 18, 1775. Document signed as Chairman of the committee of safety, ordering the selectman of the town of Kingston, N. H. to deliver six barrels of gun powder to Samuel Philbrick. In very good condition, with scattered light toning, soiling and spotting, repairs to separations on reverse and a bold signature. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
